26.11.2004

Today the Presidents of Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia with the participation of the Lithuanian Prime Minister met in Vilnius for their regular consultations and discussed the issues relating to trilateral and regional co-operation, the European Union and NATO matters as well as relations with neighbouring states.

The President of Estonia Arnold Rüütel, President of Latvia Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga and President of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus stressed the value of the ongoing successful trilateral co-operation and its significance within the European and transatlantic structures.

They welcomed the decisions to adapt the trilateral intergovernmental and parliamentary co-operation to new conditions following the accession of the Baltic States to the EU and NATO.

The Presidents underlined the importance of implementing infrastructure projects, such as interconnection of the power grids of Lithuania and Poland, and Estonia and Finland in the energy sector. They noted that implementation of this project is vital for the integration of the region into the EU internal market, and for ensuring energy supply security and sustainable economic growth of the region in the European Union of twenty five member states.

The Presidents shared the view that Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia should work in appropriate EU structures for solutions that in particular fulfill the requirement of ensuring the diversification and security of supply of natural gas for Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, as well as other EU member states.

The Presidents expressed their readiness to intensify co-operation with the countries of the South Caucasus.

Three Presidents underlined their concern about the situation in Ukraine following the run-off of the Presidential elections in Ukraine. They expressed great sympathy and support for the Ukrainian people. Ukraine can always count on the solidarity of the three Baltic States in its aspiration to create and strengthen the state on the basis of European democracy.

The Presidents noted that the EU-Russia relations should be based on shared values and common interests. The Presidents underlined the importance of a genuine strategic partnership between the European Union and Russia.
