The President of the Republicat the celebration of the 750th anniversary of Klaipedaon August 2, 2002
02.08.2002

Honourable President of the Republic of Lithuania,
Dear Colleagues,
Excellencies,
Dear Residents of Klaipeda,

I am very glad to celebrate today together with you the anniversary of the City of Klaipeda. Your city has reached an honourable age but still looks enviably youthful. Klaipeda, over the last years, has turned into a busy port looking with open eyes and mind at the free Baltic Sea, it has become the sea gate of Lithuania ready to co-operate across the Baltic Sea and also farther.

Ernest Hemingway once wrote that in every port of the world one could meet at least one Estonian. Today, I have the great pleasure of being this Estonian bringing you the best greetings from my fellow countrymen. The Lithuanian ports, Klaipeda among them, are well known and beloved in Estonia.

The Baltic Sea has been opened for a really free co-operation by the joint efforts of the Baltic States and the firm will of Europe. Today, we have unlimited opportunities for common activities - if only there were enough good ideas. No doubt that our common activities are and will be motivated by the wish to do our utmost for our homes.

It is a pleasure to see that so many friends of Klaipeda have come to share in the celebrations of the city. You can be sure that your city has supporters in all quarters of the horizon interested in co-operation and development of friendly relations with you.

Dear People of Klaipeda,

I am confident that you mark the birthday of your home city with pride and joy. The past, present and future of Klaipeda do deserve the given rich programme of the anniversary festival.

I wish both Klaipeda and the whole of Lithuania every success and lasting prosperity!
