The President of the Republic Accepting the Credentials of H.E. Mr. Ruggero Vozzi at Kadriorg, on February 21, 2002
21.02.2002

Your Excellency,
Mr. Ambassador,

With all my heart, I welcome you as the Italian Ambassador to Estonia.

Estonia and Italy are situated at the opposite sides of our continent - the former in the north, the latter in the south. And yet Europe has always united us. Also today, the integration processes of our continent have reached a most interesting and decisive phase both for Estonia and for Italy. Estonia wishes to accede both to the European Union and to NATO. Italy, who has an important position in both of these organisations, has expressed her support to Estonia's aspirations. We are grateful for your support. And now we should consider together what the Europe and the European Union of the future should look like.

Estonia and Italy have several examples of international co-operation; in several cases, we have made a joint contribution to the stability of the continent. Today, we can see this in our joint peacekeeping unit in Kosovo.

The bilateral relations between Estonia and Italy have developed with great speed. Political, economic, and cultural contacts between Estonia and Italy have more momentum and content than ever before. Estonia's economic co-operation with Italy is becoming closer, but undoubtedly, there is still space for development.

I am convinced that in the years to come, Estonia and Italy will discover many more fields where we can co-operate in the interests of our two nations and all Europe.

Mr. Ambassador,
The friendly and rich co-operation between our countries allows me to hope for fast and fruitful developments also in the future. With all my heart, I wish you success in your mission of promoting the friendship and co-operation between Estonia and Italy.
