The President of the Republic Accepting the Credentials of H.E. Mr. Luiz Henrique Pereira da Fonseca at Kadriorg, on February 21, 2002
21.02.2002

Your Excellncy,
Mr. Ambassador,

It is my pleasure to welcome you as the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Brazil to Estonia.

For the relations between Estonia and Brazil, the foundation was laid already at the beginning of last century, when Brazil recognised Estonia and supported our membership in the League of Nations. Today, further developemnt of these relations if fully natural despite the distance between us, as Brazil has one of the world's biggest economies, and Estonia is expanding her foreign relations in many directions.

Estonia and Brazil are also connected by the Estonian community in Brazil; their success indicates that there are excellent preconditions for the mutual friendship and co-operation between Estonians and Brazilians.

I have very pleasant memories of my personal stay in Brazil in 1992, when an international Summit Conference of Environment Protection took place in Rio de Janeiro. Also the fact that environmental protection is important for all countries, whether in Europe or in America, shows the diminishing of distances and the globalisation in the world.

Estonia also intends to establish closer contacts with South American countries through the Organisation of American States, where Estonia recently became an observer. Represented on this level, we will certainly have a better picture of the co-operation between the countries of America and can make more efficent plans to develop our relations with Brazil.

Mr. Ambassador!
The bilateral relations between Estonia and Brazil in the field of trade, economy, and culture doubtlessly call for further development. The friendly relations between our countries give us reason to hope that this development will be successful. Here, I also have hopes on Your Excellency's personal contribution.

With all my heart, I wish you success in your mission of promoting the relations between our two countries.
