The President of the Republic at the Economic Forum in Warsaw on March 18, 2002
18.03.2002

Honourable Hosts,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am delighted to open the present economic forum and to greet you on behalf of the Estonian representatives. We have gathered here today to create together new opportunities for co-operation, in this way enhancing the well-being both of ourselves and of our nations.

It is true that Estonia and Poland are not neighbours, but they are close both geographically and in relation to their economic policies.

In the recent history, just a little over ten years ago, the economies of Estonia and Poland underwent drastic changes and the following years have not been simple either. But still, we have made significant progress. The living standard in Poland and Estonia has risen, coming up to 40 per cent of the average of the European Union.

In parallel with the general development of our countries, the volume of trade between Estonia and Poland has multiplied. Yet, there is plenty of scope for growth both in respect of the trade and mutual investments. Therefore, I welcome the extension of the scope of our free trade agreements having taken place during the last couple of years.

No doubt, advancement of mutual economic ties is beneficial for both sides and, at the same time, important while preparing to join the European Union. The forthcoming accession to the European Union will broaden the prospects of our enterprises. On the other hand, we know well that problems also will arise, due to the need to adapt to new requirements and conditions. Therefore, we ought to ask each other both at the level of enterprise and state: what kind of advantages could we get from building a closer relationship between us?

Dear Businessmen,

Exchange of views and learning from each other always help to find answers and to overcome difficulties. In our quest for success, the readiness to risk, perseverance and will to work of the businessmen of both countries hardly can be overrated. A face-to-face contact, a handshake and a friendly word - that's the best start for getting to know each other and for working together.

May your forum be successful!
