Your Excellency,
Mr Ambassador,
I am glad to welcome you cordially as the Ambassador of Romania to Estonia.
This year Estonia and Romania will celebrate already the eightieth anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. During the years passed since then both of the countries had to live through quite many undesirable experiences but today, considering our new, common goals, we are closer than ever before.
Estonia has been regarding Romanian efforts to renew its society with great sympathy. We are very pleased that like Estonia Romania has set itself the aim to join the European Union and the North Atlantic Alliance. For the sake of achieving those aims Estonia and Romania can support and while exchanging experiences help each other.
For Romania the very responsible period of the presidency in the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe is going to end soon. On this occasion I would like to thank your country for the successful work carried out leading the activities of this Organisation that is encompassing the whole Euro-Atlantic space. All the more so, as the period of Romanian presidency in several respects has been of vital importance for Estonia too.
Estonia sincerely wishes to build a closer bilateral relationship with Romania. Two maritime countries, one of them lying at the Baltic and the other one at the Black Sea, can definitely find mutually interesting ways for co-operation in the fields of economy, environmental protection, tourism, cultural exchange, and in many other areas alike.
The friendly and fruitful co-operation between our countries so far permits me to count on a rapid and successful development of our relations in future as well. But as for the geographical distance between Estonia and Romania - our similar attitudes, values and goals will help us to overcome it.
I am confident that Estonia and Romania will find in the years ahead plenty of fields in which to co-operate in the interests of both our people and our whole continent.

Please accept my heartfelt wishes for your success in the promotion of friendship and co-operation between Estonia and Romania.
