The President of the Republic at Dinner at Kadriorg on October 8, 2001
08.10.2001

Dear Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Riigikogu,
dear Prime Minister,
Commander of the Defence Forces,
President of the Bank of Estonia,
Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Estonia,
Legal Chancellor and Auditor General,
dear ladies and gentlemen!

Today, many words have been said about the merits of the President leaving office and the action plans of the President assuming office. I believe we have together asserted that there is no alternative to the development of Estonia. But we can only be successful if we are able to co-operate and support each other in achieving our common goals. I am deeply grateful to my competitors in the election campaign - Mr. Toomas Savi, Mr. Peeter Kreitzberg, Mr. Peeter Tulviste and Mr. Andres Tarand. Your attitude appreciating partnership on the one hand, and your sophisticated and well-founded postulates on the other hand also helped me to express my positions with more clarity, and to see several problems from a fresh aspect. Thank you very much for the fair and discreet competition.

Just as there is no alternative to the development of Estonia, there is no alternative to the co-operation with all the others whose calling and duty it is to ensure the right and firm progress of these developments.

Today, this acquires a special undertone in the light of the beginning war against terrorism and anti-democracy.

Developing and enhancing our sovereign democracy, we are also capable of making our contribution to the widening and deepening of global democracy.

Tomorrow is Tuesday, October 9, 2001. It will be an ordinary working day, and certainly a good day to start the five years of presidency, new quests and new discoveries in mutual consideration, support and recognition.

I wish us all strength in accomplishing our common goals.
