The President of the Republic met with the Presidential Roundtable on National Minorities

President Arnold Rüütel at Kadriorg met with the members of the Presidential Roundtable on National Minorities.President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with the members of the Presidential Roundtable on National Minorities.

The President of the Republic thanked the members of the Roundtable for pleasant cooperation. ''The work of the Roundtable has always been conducted in a spirit of good will and mutual understanding between all participants. I hope that this will continue also in the future,'' the Head of State said.

The participants of the meeting said many good words while commenting the activity of President Rüütel as the Head of State and thanked him for having been balanced, and for his wisdom and fair-mindedness. For example, in the words of Professor Hanon Barabaner ''when regarding President Rüütel’s dignified activities it does not even come to anybody’s mind that politics is a dirty game.''

Politicians from Estonian right-wing parties who spoke at the meeting said that the five-year long activity of Arnold Rüütel as the Head of State has facilitated quick development of civil society and has made Estonia a better place, and that the activity of the Roundtable can be a good example for other similar traditions that are aimed at creating balance in society.

Nelli Kalikova stressed that President Rüütel was the first politician in Estonia who had responded to serious threat signals concerning the spread of AIDS and had arranged meetings to discuss that problem at a higher level for the first time.

Jaak Prozes said that President Rüütel has earned the admiration and respect of Fenno-Ugric people who live in Russia, and the now departing Head of State who has been for a long time a consistent promoter of cooperation between kindred nations has managed to strengthen the self-esteem of those people and has given them confidence for their future.

The Head of State thanked the members of the Roundtable for their kind words and said that he was ready also in the future to give his contribution to guaranteeing that all people, irrespective of one’s nationality, who consider Estonia their homeland could have humanly dignified life and civic rights. In the course of discussion also some topical economic and social problems were addressed.

The Presidential Roundtable on National Minorities comprises of the best Estonian experts on national minorities.
