The President of the Republic met with the Ambassador of Russia14.09.2006
President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg received the Ambassador of the Russian Federation Nikolai Uspenski who presented his Letter of Credentials.
In the words of the President of the Republic Estonian-Russian relations have been thriving over the last couple of years, but it is certainly necessary to further intensify our bilateral contacts. ''We both are aware that advancement in the relations between our two countries is possible if there is political will. I assure you that Estonia is continuously ready for lasting constructive dialogue,'' the Head of State said.
President Rüütel stressed the importance of Estonian-Russian regional cooperation and noted that such cooperation was necessary and normal between two neighbours. ''Time and again there have been mutual visits of local government delegations from neighbouring border regions. Herewith I would like to emphasise the well-functioning cooperation between the border guard as well as between the customs and the police. Those are good examples of cooperation from which citizens of our two countries can benefit the most,'' the President of the Republic added.
In his speech the Ambassador of Russia affirmed that Russia was open for developing contacts with Estonia at the political level that would lead to concrete results. ''In this area we can clearly see advancement in our relations, but also in the field of economy, culture and others,'' the Ambassador said.
Ambassador Uspenski added that in Estonian-Russian relations there was still unrealised potential in getting closer to each other on the basis of mutual respect. ''It is a natural wish of every country to see one's neighbour as a democratic, stable and economically flourishing country,'' the Ambassador of the Russian Federation said.
