The President of the Republic received the ambassadors of the Republic of Estonia
06.09.2006

The President of the Republic today in the rose garden of the President’s office received ambassadors of the Republic of Estonia to foreign countries.

In his greeting address President Rüütel underlined that Estonia made its choices at the beginning of 1990-s and now, after being a member in the European Union and NATO almost for two and a half years already, we can say that those choices have brought us success and people’s support has remained high.

“Presently, the most important tasks for Estonia are joining the euro zone and the Schengen legal space as well as matters related to the Treaty Establishing a Constitution for Europe. Also Estonia’s continuous participation in international missions and development cooperation is essential,” the Head of State said.

The President of the Republic accentuated that although allegations about possible changes have been used in pre-election rhetoric, Estonia’s foreign policy course has to remain unchanged and the ambassadors should pass that message on to Estonia’s partner states. “Estonia will not depart or turn back from its present main course. The foreign policy of our state has to develop both broadly by strengthening the network of foreign representations and in depth by continuously fulfilling obligations to our partners and developing relations in all fields starting from politics and economy and ending with culture and education,” the Head of State said.

President Rüütel thanked the heads of diplomatic representations for their indispensable contribution in representing Estonian state and asserted that cooperation with them had been intensive and very pleasant.

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet, in his turn, thanked the Head of State for his cooperation until now. The minister stressed that further cooperation between the President, the Riigikogu and the Government, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was essential for shaping and implementing Estonia’s foreign policy goals, and stressed the importance of preserving the continuity of Estonia’s foreign policy.

President Rüütel discussed topical foreign policy issues with the ambassadors, and acquainted them with his viewpoints in that field.
