The President of the Republic received ambassadors residing in Estonia
20.08.2006

On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the restoration of Estonia's independence, President Rüütel and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel hosted a festive dinner for ambassadors of foreign countries residing in Estonia today in the Kadriorg Art Museum.

In his speech delivered at the dinner President Rüütel stressed that today the Republic of Estonia participates actively in international relations. ''As a NATO and EU-Member State we are doing better than ever before. However, Estonia should not only rejoice but also be a reliable and responsible partner, meeting its commitments to the European Union, NATO and other international organizations,'' the President of the Republic said.

''Within a short period of time, Estonia together with Latvia and Lithuania, regained its rightful place in the free world, opened the door to the UN and to many other international organizations. I would like to express my gratitude once more to the countries that in the years of occupation stood firm in their non-recognition policy,'' the Head of State said

In the words of President Rüütel, a secure world, advancing Europe and cooperation based on trust with countries that respect freedom and democratic values – these are goals we set fifteen years ago when restoring our independent statehood. We are committed to securing these goals also today.

In the morning, President Rüütel participated in the meeting of ''August 20 Club'' in Toompea palace. At 2 pm, a traditional festive concert to celebrate the Day of Restoration of Independence was held in the rose garden of the Office of the President of the Republic, where President Rüütel delivered a speech. At 4 pm the President of the Republic greeted the audience of a public concert held on the occasion of the Day of Restoration of Independence in Town Hall Square. After dinner, at 9:30 pm, the President of the Republic will participate in the programme ''Is this the Estonia we wanted?'' that will be aired live on ETV and Vikerraadio.
