The President of the Republic unveiled the sculpture “Kalevipoeg ploughing”
19.08.2006

President Arnold Rüütel and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel today participated in a ceremony of unveiling the monumental sculpture “Kalevipoeg ploughing” in Põltsamaa, Jõgeva County.

Unveiling the sculpture, the President of the Republic said that during the anniversary of the restoration of independence we remember people who have helped to create, restore and build up the Estonian state, and we think of values and symbols that have given us spiritual strength.

“One of such symbols is Kalevipoeg whom we know from Finnish-Estonian common folklore and who is and will surely be also in the future a symbol of independence aspiration of the Estonian people. We know well the prediction that is written down by Kreutzwald in our national epic story according to which one day our mythical hero will come back home to bring happiness to his children,” the Head of State said.

“I wish all of us strength of mind and love towards our homeland so that we shall be able to create a new day of prosperity for Estonia. I thank my fellow countrymen for their efforts made for the sake of our state, and my gratitude goes also to all those people who made it possible that Kalevipoeg could come back to plough furrows in Vooremaa,” President Rüütel said.

The initiator of the sculpture and the founder of Friendship Park Ants Paju, the sculpture’s author Tauno Kangro, Mayor of Jõgeva County Aivar Kokk, Count Carlisle, project sponsors Urmas Sõõrumaa and Heino Priimägi also spoke at the ceremony. The Olympic winners Jaan Talts and Ivar Stukolkin assisted in unveiling the sculpture. Ants Paju thanked the sponsors who had supported the project and President Rüütel who was the patron of the project, and presented them reduced copies of the sculpture. Pastor Arho Tuhkur consecrated the sculpture.

The unveiling ceremony of the monumental sculpture was followed by a concert in Põltsamaa where the Estonian National Male Choir (RAM), ETV Children’s Choir and the orchestra of the Estonian Defense Forces performed.
