The President of the Republic met with Russian Transport Minister

President Arnold Rüütel met with Igor Levitin, Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation.President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with Igor Levitin, Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation.

The topics discussed at the meeting covered Estonian-Russian economic relations, primarily the issues related to the development of transport network between the two countries. Both sides concluded that the border crossing at the Estonian-Russian border must be improved, and stressed the importance of construction of a new bridge in Narva. Broader issues of cross border cooperation were also discussed, including opening of ship traffic between Estonia and Russia on Lake Peipsi.

The President of the Republic said that Estonian entrepreneurs are very much interested in advancement of economic relations with Russia and hope that the current artificial trade barriers that have political background would soon disappear. The head of state added that the infrastructure of Estonia, including ports, thanks to its quality and existing potentials, allows to significantly increase the haulage volumes from Russia and rapidly developing Asian countries to the EU countries.
