The President of the Republic met with young history researchers

President Arnold Rüütel at Kadriorg met with the winners of the students’ history research contest and their tutors.President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with the winners of the students’ history research contest and their tutors.

The President of the Republic who is the patron of the competition, announced this year’s competition on September 1, 2005. This was the seventh history competition in succession and its topic was “Re-independent Republic of Estonia”. The total number of works submitted to the competition from all over Estonia was 96.

In the group of secondary school students the first prize was awarded to Epp Espenberg from Tartu Kivilinna Gymnasium for her work “Estonian independence: from the rouble to the kroon”, tutors Piia Jullinen and Allan Espenberg: the second prize was awarded to Marju Veevo from Karksi-Nuia Gymnasium for her work “My family in the winds of change 1985-1995”, tutor Marika Mäekivi; the third prize was awarded to Lii Laande from Karksi-Nuia Gymnasium for her work “Village of Lilli before and after the restoration of Estonia’s independence”, tutor Marika Mäekivi.

In the group of basic school students the first prize was awarded to Madis Hurt from Lähte Gymnasium for his work “Winds of change in Estonian agriculture according to the example of Sootaga State Farm”, tutor Viivi Rohtla; the second and the third places were shared by two contestants:Olavi Soosaar from Pärnu Rääma Basic School for his work “School violence and its manifestation at Rääma Basic School”, tutor Eve Alu, and Mait Peetsalu from Ülenurme Gymnasium for his work “Home County”, tutor Milvi Tisler.

The aims of the competition are to analyse and understand national values and to maintain the intergenerational bond and continuity, to encourage students' interest in history, to expand their horizon, and also to develop their independent study and research skills. The competition is organised by the Estonian History Teachers' Association and the Körber Foundation from Germany. Monetary awards were provided by the Cultural Foundation of the President of the Republic at the proposal of the jury, books presented as gifts were donated by the Ministry of Education and Research.
