The President of the Republic met with the President of the Czech Republic
23.05.2006

President of the Czech Republic Václav Klaus and Mrs. Livia Klausová today arrived for a state visit to Estonia and were greeted by the President of the Republic of Estonia and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel at Kadriorg.

Following an official reception ceremony held in front of the Presidential Palace, the presidents had a tête-à-tête meeting, and after that a meeting with delegations. Primarily, cooperation within the framework of the European Union, the EU Neighbourhood Policy, and the possibilities of further development of Estonian-Czech economic relations were discussed.

Both Heads of State affirmed that Estonian-Czech relations are very good and will certainly become more intensive within the framework of the European Union. President Rüütel assured that Estonia is very much interested in further development of economic ties and expressed his satisfaction over the fact that President Klaus has a big business delegation accompanying him during his visit to Estonia.

In the words of the President of the Czech Republic, the Czech Republic considers Estonia’s development as of great interest and gives recognition to Estonian reforms and progress. President Klaus emphasised the principle of equal treatment of states in the European Union and found that it is necessary, at any cost, to prevent the creation of a multileveled Europe.

The presidents also discussed the EU Constitutional Treaty and Estonian and Czech positions on that issue.

In the evening, the President of the Republic and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel will host a festive dinner in honour of the President of the Czech Republic and Mrs. Livia Klausová.
