The President of the Republic met with the President of Georgia and the Chairman of the Georgian Parliament

President Rüütel, within the framework of his official visit, met with President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili.President Rüütel, on Thursday, within the framework of his official visit, met with President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili and Chairman of the Parliament Nino Burjanadze.

In the morning, an official greeting ceremony was held in the courtyard of the Georgian Parliament, which was broadcasted live by the Georgian TV. After that the presidents had a tête-à-tête meeting, which was followed by a meeting with the delegations. At the meeting, various fields of cooperation between Estonia and Georgia were discussed; topical problems with Georgian wine export were discussed at greater length. After that the two heads of state made a lengthy statement to the press. President Saakashvili called Estonia a country of hope and an example for Georgia both in politics as well as in economy. President Rüütel said that Estonia supports wholesome and stable Georgia on its difficult but necessary path of reforms, and added that Russian troops must be withdrawn from Georgia according to the schedule.

The topics discussed at the meeting with Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Nino Burjanadze included the strengthening of interparliamentary ties, and Georgia’s problems in economic relations, primarily with Russia, but also those concerning the production of counterfeit Georgian wines in Europe. Following that, the Head of Estonian State laid a wreath at the memorial on the Square of Heroes. In the afternoon, the President of the Republic gave an interview to Rustavi 2 TV channel.

The Estonian business delegation visited the aircraft manufacturing enterprise Tbilaviamsheni JSC. Minister of Economy and Communications Edgar Savisaar and the members of the business delegation met with Georgia’s Minister of Economic Development Irakli Chogovadze. Minister of Justice Rein Lang made a presentation in the local school for diplomats.

Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel visited Tbilisi Youth Palace, where she watched a children’s song and dance performance, and after that she visited the Georgian National Museum and the old town of Tbilisi.

Georgia’s President Mikhail Saakashvili and Mrs. Sandra Roelofs hosted a dinner in honour of the Head of Estonian State and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel, where the two presidents made speeches.

On Friday, President Rüütel will visit Kakhethi wine region and will meet with the head of Georgian Orthodox Church, the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II, and Prime Minister Zurab Nogaideli. Late Saturday night, the Head of State will start his journey back to Estonia.
