The President of the Republic met with the Constitutional Committee of the Riigikogu
18.04.2006

President Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with the Constitutional Committee of the Riigikogu. The issue of ratification of the Constitutional Treaty of the European Union, which is currently being processed in the Riigikogu, was the main topic of the meeting. Amendments to the Election Act, including the regulation of pre-election outdoor political advertising were also discussed.

The President of the Republic expressed support to the ratification of the Constitutional Treaty of the European Union in the Riigikogu. In the course of the discussion, it was concluded that it would guarantee more efficient functioning of the EU policies, primarily what concerns the realisation of the four fundamental freedoms of the Community. Thereat, it was stressed that Estonia has to support the democratisation in the EU’s neighbouring countries.

President Rüütel expressed hope that for political outdoor advertising a compromise that is in conformity with the Constitution would be found. After all, before the elections the most essential thing is to explain one’s promises and ideas directly to the voters, the Head of Estonian State added.
