The President of the Republic met with heads of state26.03.2006
President Rüütel, today, at Kadriorg Art Museum held a reception in memory of President Meri for foreign guests.
At the reception the President of the Republic met with the President of the Republic of Latvia Vaira Vike-Freiberga, the President of the Republic of Finland Tarja Halonen, and the President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus. President Rüütel met also with the former heads of state of Finland Mauno Koivisto and Martti Ahtisaari, the former heads of state of Lithuania Algirdas Brazauskas and Vytautas Landsbergis, the former Federal President of Germany Roman Herzog and the former head of state of Latvia Guntis Ulmanis.
At the reception, the activity of President Meri as the head of state was remembered. At the same time, several foreign guests commended the dignified and beautiful funeral ceremony arranged by the government of Estonia.
The President of Latvia Vaira Vike-Freiberga, the President of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus, and the President of Iceland Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson gave eulogies at the reception.
At noon, President Rüütel attended the funeral service of Lennart Meri in Kaarli Church, and after that, gave a memorial speech at the ceremony held in front of the President’s Office. The text of the eulogy is available at the following address. www.president.ee
