The President of the Republic opened an Estonian-Moldovan business forum

President Rüütel and President Voronin, today, in Chişinau, opened an Estonian-Moldovan business forum in the Government Palace of Moldova. The Head of the Estonian State is accompanied on the state visit to Moldova by a 15-member business delegation headed by Siim Raie, Director General of the Estonian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

At the opening of the forum, the President of the Republic made a brief overview of Estonian economic policy after the restoration of the country’s independence, and expressed support to Moldova's reform processes and aspirations of moving towards Europe. ''I am sincerely pleased that the cooperation between our two countries has noticeably intensified in recent years. At least in the public sector it has reached a very practical level – as examples of cooperation areas, we can underline here enhancement of administrative capacity, use of information and communication technology, and development of an information society,'' President Rüütel said.

''I know that Estonian entrepreneurs and investors are seriously interested in Moldova, and several of them are at present here today. Though it is our third day in Moldova, our business delegation has already visited several local enterprises. The information and contacts received from toady’s business forum will certainly enhance our bilateral trade and investments,'' the Head of Estonian State added.

Afterwards, President Rüütel met with the Chairman of the Parliament of Moldova Marian Lupu, with whom possibilities of intensification of interparliament cooperation were discussed. The Head of Estonian State noted that both parties are certainly interested in such cooperation, as several spheres of life in Moldova are regulated differently than in Estonia, and expressed hope that interparliament cooperation will be pleasant and fruitful.

In the words of the Chairman of the Moldovan Parliament, Estonia has recently reached the end of its journey to the European Union and Moldova is certainly willing to learn from this experience.

The President of the Republic also visited the Ministry of Information Development of Moldova that is responsible for development and administration of state data registers, issuing of documents and questions concerning information technology and communications. Minister of Information Development Vladimir Molojen introduced the day-to-day activities of his ministry and its future projects. President Rüütel briefly spoke on the progress made by Estonia in the field of information technology, and confirmed Estonia's readiness to share its experience in that field with Moldova.

In the afternoon, President Rüütel will visit the Căpriana Monastery and the Hîncu Nunnery, and in the evening will visit Mileştii Mici wine cellar.

The President of the Republic will arrive in Estonia tomorrow, March 22.
