The President of the Republic met with Moldovan state leaders

President Arnold Rüütel, today, within the framework of his state visit, met with the President of Moldova Vladimir Voronin and Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev, and visited the National Museum of Ethnography and History of the Republic of Moldova.

At the meeting of delegations, following the official reception ceremony in the residence of the President of Moldova, issues related to Moldova's internal development, steps towards integration with the European Union and NATO, and the challenges of the settlement of Transnistria problem were discussed.

In the words of the President of the Republic, Estonia supports Moldova's foreign policy course for integration with Transantlantic structures and considers Moldova as a priority within the European Neighbourhood Policy. The Head of Estonian State added that in the event that our reform experiences can be helpful and applicable, Estonia is continuously ready to share its experience with Moldova at the bilateral level as well as through multilateral programmes.

President Voronin thanked Estonia for support and added that Moldova highly appreciates Estonia's experience, especially, as the most of challenges that Moldova is facing now are those that Estonia has managed to solve successfully for itself. The Head of Moldovan State gave an overview of his country's development and challenges, including the steps that have been taken for the settlement of Transnistria problem.

President Rüütel confirmed that Estonia supports the complete and unconditional withdrawal of the troops of the Russian Federation from Moldova, and considers it also to be a question of the credibility of the OSCE.

Following the meeting with the President of Moldova, the Head of Estonian State laid a wreath to the monument of Prince Stefan of Moldavia (Ştefan cel Mare şi Sfînti).

At the meeting with Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev, President Rüütel noted that the EU's Border Assistance Mission on Moldova-Ukraine border should not be the last EU mission in Moldova, and added that Estonia has participated in the creation and later in the work of that mission.

In the words of Moldovan prime minister, for the settlement of Transnistria problem very important is cooperation with Ukraine and efficient border control, and that Moldova is very grateful to Estonia for participating in the EU Border Assistance Mission.

After that, The President of the Republic will visit the National Museum of Ethnography and History of the Republic of Moldova. In the evening, President Vladimir Voronin will host a festive dinner in honour of the President of the Republic.

Minister of Agriculture Ester Tuiksoo, today, met with her Moldovan colleague to discuss possibilities for further cooperation and exchange of experiences.

Tomorrow morning, President Rüütel will open a Moldovan-Estonian business forum in the palace of the Moldovan Government, will meet with the Chairman of the Moldovan Parliament Marian Lupu and Minister of Information Development Vladimir Molojen, and will visit the Căpriana Monastery and the Hîncu Nunnery.

The President of the Republic will return to Estonia on Wednesday, March 22.
