The President of the Republic congratulated the President of the Republic of Finland

President Arnold Rüütel today sent his congratulations to Tarja Halonen on the occasion of being elected the President of the Republic of Finland.

In his message, the Head of the Estonian State noted that relations between Estonia and Finland have traditionally been intensive and close, and Estonia attaches great importance to the continuation of our successful cooperation also in the future. “Our joint activities as the Baltic Sea countries help to guarantee a stable and sustainable development and security for the whole region. Our region has a very significant role in Europe, and has a great development potential that has to be utilised. This is an understanding that our two countries share and this has brought our peoples closer to each other,” President Rüütel added.

The President of the Republic extended to President Halonen also an invitation to visit Estonia in the near future.

Yesterday night, following the announcement of the preliminary election results, the President of the Republic also congratulated his Finnish colleague over the phone.
