The President of the Republic participated in the opening of the International Hanseatic Days in Tartu

The President of the Republic and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel today participated in the opening of the 25th International Hanseatic Days in Tartu. Before the opening ceremony, President Rüütel, who is the patron of this year's Hanseatic Days, met in Tartu Town Hall with Mayor of Tartu Laine Jänes and the Chairman of the Hanseatic League, Mayor of Lübeck Berndt Saxe.

In his greeting address, the Head of State noted: "History has shown that what we cannot do alone, we can do in cooperation with others. Due to common interests and joint activities the Hanseatic towns have become noticeably similar, though, because of their richness, they have maintain their unique individuality."

The President of the Republic added that the Hanseatic League was closely connected also with the Baltic Sea. "Knowing and following the rules at that sea guaranteed stability and prosperity of the whole region. This could be a useful lesson to learn also today, teaching us that if we can agree about something and keep our word, we will be successful," the Head of State said.

President Rüütel was confident that everybody could find something interesting and rewarding from the rich programme of the Hanseatic Days. "You surely find time also to enjoy the youthful atmosphere of Tartu and experience that this city is full of good ideas and energetic people," the Head of State said and wished the participants of the Hanseatic Days good ideas and pleasant impressions.
