The President of the Republic met with the Rural Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu22.04.2004
President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with Members of the Rural Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu. The Committee briefed the President of the Republic on the current status of the draft legislation concerning agriculture and rural affairs.
The meeting agreed that the Estonian agricultural sector had already bottomed out and, at the same time, the new operational environment within the European Union would bring about many new opportunities that had to be taken seriously in order to make more productive use of them.
The meeting discussed more thoroughly preparations to use EU subsidies through the instruments of the Rural Development Plan and Estonian National Development Plan, as well as Estonia's pertinent absorption capacity. President Rüütel emphasised that consistent consideration of small farmers' interests in working out agricultural support systems helped significantly raise profile of rural life.
