The President of the Republic met with the German Minister of Defence Mr Rudolf Scharping

President Arnold Rüütel received the Minister of Defence of the Federal Republic of Germany Mr Rudolf Scharping in the Kadriorg Presidential Palace today.

The President of the Republic Arnold Rüütel thanked the Federal Republic of Germany for the assistance given by the latter to Estonia both in its preparations for the accession to the European Union and in the restoration of the Estonian Defence Forces after the Republic of Estonia regained independence. President Rüütel reminded him that the assistance of Germany was particularly efficient in the restoration of the Estonian Naval Forces, but assistance has been received also for the training of the staff and improvement of the armament.

The President of the Republic assured again that Estonia will do everything under its control to join both the European Union and NATO soon. The President supported in all respects also the position of Germany that all three Baltic states should be accepted to NATO at a time, which would also correspond in every way to the intentions of and efforts made by all three countries.

The Minister of Defence of the Federal Republic of Germany Mr Rudolf Scharping acknowledged the progress made by Estonia towards the membership of NATO, saying that Estonia has really done a lot for the achievement of that aim. The German minister assured that the support to the strivings of Estonia both in the direction of NATO and that of the European Union have found and will find stable support on the part of the Federal Republic of Germany also in the future.
