The President of the Republic has received many good wishes at the end of his time in office

President Arnold Rüütel has received many good wishes and recognition at the end of his term of office both from private citizens and heads of state.

The first message that arrived on Monday, September 25 was a letter of thanks sent by President George W. Bush who thanked President Rüütel on behalf of the United States of America for the dedication he has shown to advancing the ideals of freedom and democracy around the world as President of Estonia.

“You have been a staunch ally in combating terrorism and promoting peace around the world. The United States appreciates your support for our joint efforts in the Balkans, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

Your distinguished career of service to the people of Estonia has contributed to your country's success. Under your leadership, Estonia has become a valued partner in the NATO Alliance, the European Union, an historic achievement.

Our bilateral relationship has also grown strong during your time in office. I appreciate the close friendship and cooperation you have extended to the United States. Together, we are contributing to the advance of freedom around the world,” was written in the letter sent by President Bush.

A cordial letter was also sent by the President of the Republic of Finland Tarja Halonen who wrote: “Now, when your meritorious and fruitful work as President of Estonia is about to end, I would like once more to extend on my own behalf and on behalf of all Finnish people our deepest appreciation to you for very fruitful cooperation during all those years. I hope that also in the future your family would not forget Finland, and you are always welcome to visit Finland.”

Many words of thanks and support messages have also arrived from private citizens who wish President Rüütel and Mrs. Rüütel “strength, good health and perseverance to realise your ideas,” thanks are expressed also for “work done by the heart”, “especially for the efforts you made for the sake of Estonia’s EU accession!” It has been written to the outgoing Head of State that “During the last five years life has proceeded. Without your contribution it would not have been so. You were the President for the whole nation. We thank you for that and wish success in the future.”
