The President of the Republic thanked the Ambassador of the Republic of France

Ambassador of the Republic of France Chantal de Ghaisne de Bourmont today at Kadriorg paid a farewell visit to President Arnold Rüütel who thanked the ambassador for her contribution to promoting her home country in Estonia and diversifying contacts between the two countries.

In the words of President Rüütel, we all have a reason to rejoice over the development of bilateral relations between Estonia and France. ''Your work as the Ambassador of the Republic of France to the Republic of Estonia since November 2002 till today has been very fruitful for the development of Estonian-French relations. I recall with warmest feelings my visit to France in the summer of 2003 and my meeting with President Chirac, which happened to a great extent thanks to your efforts,'' the President of the Republic noted.

''During your term as an ambassador to Estonia, Estonia and France have become partners who develop cooperation and set goals for the near and further future of Europe. France has worked constructively in order to facilitate Estonia's accession to the European Union and the North Atlantic Alliance. It concerns both the pre-accession preparations and the actual accession process. Madam Ambassador, I believe that having been one of the participants of that process you are now certainly richer by a new experience, and I hope that you look back at that time with satisfaction,'' the head of Estonian sate said.

In recognition of the Ambassador's services, President Rüütel conferred on her the 1st class Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana.

The French ambassador thanked the President of the Republic for the honour bestowed on her, and said that she was happy for having an opportunity to give her contribution to the development of Estonian-French relations. ''During my four-year period of intensive work in Estonia I discovered here a very strong and deeply European country and people. I saw your country's excellent adaptability to changes both in economy and politics,'' the departing French ambassador said.
