The President of the Republic met with the Ambassador of Uruguay

President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg received the Ambassador of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay Néstor Julio Moreira Moran who presented his Letter of Credentials.

In the words of the President of the Republic relations between Estonia and Uruguay are based on mutual friendship and consideration of each other's interests. ''Being both members in several international organisations Estonia and Uruguay are linked through many shared common interests. Cooperation based on mutual trust and understanding within the framework of the United Nations Organisation is one of the prospective areas of our cooperation,'' the Head of State said.

President Rüütel noted that Estonia had kept itself abreast of the activities of MERCOSUR and intended to intensify its contacts with South American countries also within the framework of the Organisation of American States, in which Estonia has been holding the position of an observer.

The Ambassador of Uruguay said that his country has noticed the interest of young Estonians in short term studies in Uruguay for which they are very satisfied. It is also necessary to support the exchange of persons of all ages that for tourism or business reasons want to establish new links between our countries, Ambassador Moran added.
