PRELIMINARY NOTICE: The President of the Republic will go to Scotland to meet with Queen Elizabeth II

President Arnold Rüütel and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel will leave on Sunday, July 2, for a visit to the United Kingdom to meet the head of state of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Her Majesty Elizabeth II and to visit Scotland.

On Sunday evening, the presidential couple will arrive in Edinburgh via London.

On Monday, July 3, President Rüütel will visit Edinburgh Castle, Glenkinchie Whisky Distillery, Stobshiels Mains sheep farm, and will meet local businessmen. The head of Estonian state will be accompanied by Scottish Environment and Rural Development Minister Ross Finnie. In the evening the presidential couple’s schedule includes a visit to the Scottish Parliament and a meeting with the Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament George Reid, who together with his wife will host a dinner in honour of the head of Estonian state and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel. The President of the Republic will also meet the Estonian community in Scotland, the leader of which is Doctor of Sociology Pille Petersoo.

On Monday, within the framework of her special programme Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel will visit Wishaw Library and will open there an exhibition of photographs by Endel Grensmann „Bird’s Eye Estonia“. Mrs. Rüütel will acquaint herself with the exhibits of Kelvingrove Art Gallery and will visit National Piping Centre and will meet with Liz Cameron, Mayor of Glasgow. In the afternoon Mrs. Rüütel will visit Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and meet the academics and students there.

On Tuesday, July 4, the President of the Republic will meet with the Scottish First Minister Jack McConnell. Thereafter the presidential couple will go to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, where they are received in audience by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. President Rüütel will give an interview to BBC, and after that will leave Edinburgh via London for Estonia where he will arrive late in the evening.

With this visit, the President of the Republic will make preparations for the visit of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh to Estonia that is going to take place in October this year. This will be an historic event as it is the first time that the Head of State of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland visits Estonia.

The head of Estonian state will be accompanied by Margus Laidre, Ambassador of the Republic of Estonia to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
