The President of the Republic handed over a state decoration to Andrus Veerpalu28.06.2006
 President Rüütel today at Kadriorg handed over the 1st class Order of the White Star to the two times Olympic champion Andrus Veerpalu. The head of state made the decision to confer a state decoration on Andrus Veerpalu on February 22, 2006.
Among the members of Estonian team successfully participating in the Torino Winter Olympics the two times Olympic winner Kristina Šmigun was awarded the 1st class Order of the White Star and the coaches of Olympic winners Anatoli Šmigun and Mati Alaver were awarded the 3rd class Order of the White Star, which the President of the Republic had handed over already on March 14.
Handing over the state decoration President Rüütel said that everybody still has a vivid memory of the victorious performance of Andrus Veerpalu in Torino and the joy it had aroused on the ski stadium. Andrus Veerpalu thanked the head of state for the high recognition bestowed upon him.
