PRELIMINARY NOTICE: President of the Republic is going to visit the eastern border of Estonia

President Arnold Rüütel is going to visit North-East and South-East Border Guard Districts on Estonia’s eastern border on 26 and 27 June. The President will acquaint himself with Estonia’s preparations for the accession to the Schengen area.

On Monday, 26 June the President of the Republic is going to visit Narva Border Station. Director General of the Board of the Border Guard colonel Roland Peets will provide an overview of the programmes and use of the resources under the Schengen Facility. They will discuss the impact of the programmes on the development of the infrastructure and cooperation with the Boarder Guard of Russian Federation. The President is going to visit the border checkpoint on the Pedestrian Bridge in Narva as well as Mustvee, Alajõe and Varnja Border Stations.

On Tuesday, 27 June the President will go to the island of Piirissaare and visit Praaga border check point. On the island of Piirissaare President Rüütel is going to visit the radar surveillance centre. Later on the President will continue his visit along the land border near Värska to see Koidula point of entry in operation. President Rüütel will discuss border control principles and technology within the Schengen area. The President of the Republic will complete his visit to Estonia’s eastern border at Luhamaa, at the construction site of the new border station built with the support of Phare funds.

The President of the Republic is accompanied by Interior Minister Kalle Laanet and Director General of the Board of the Border Guard Roland Peets as well as county governors and heads of local governments from the regions on the itinerary.
