President Arnold Rüütel met with Frans W. Weisglas, the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Kingdom of Netherlands.President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with Frans W. Weisglas, the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Kingdom of Netherlands.

President Rüütel noted that Estonian-Dutch bilateral relations have been very good and that the cooperation within the framework of the Benelux countries has also been very successful. The Head of Estonian State suggested that among possible prospective fields of cooperation would be cooperation between port cities to intermediate Asian goods to the West European markets. The Speaker of the Netherlands House of Representatives agreed with that viewpoint and said that for Tallinn and Rotterdam it would be much better to cooperate than compete in that field.

Issues related to the EU Constitutional Treaty, developing of European common foreign policy, and the further enlargement of the European Union were discussed as well. The President of the Republic expressed support to the further enlargement of the European Union and concluded that it would help Europe to show a good example for the rest of the world. Speaker Weisglas agreed and added that it is also important to facilitate the process of democratisation in neighbouring countries through joint cooperation projects.
