23.05.2006

President Rüütel met with Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Immigration of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg Jean Asselborn.President Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Immigration of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg Jean Asselborn who is on a working visit to Estonia.

Minister Asselborn conveyed to the Head of Estonian State the greetings of His Royal Highness, the Grand-Duke Henri of Luxembourg, and thanked Estonia for ratifying the EU Constitutional Treaty, which was a strong message for entire Europe.

President Rüütel said that the Constitutional Treaty as a declaration of common values of the European Union is a right step towards securing the future of this union of states. The President of the Republic, at the guest’s request, introduced the development of Estonian public opinion about the EU affairs, and underlined that Estonia is interested in further development of the European Union as well as in promotion of active Neighbourhood Policy in the countries that have chosen the path of democracy.

Deputy Prime Minister of Luxembourg said that the further EU enlargement creates doubts in Western Europe, first of all the question whether the European Union that is formed through such enlargement would reflect the spirit and idea of Europe the same way as the union of European states before the Maastricht Treaty did. Minister Asselborn was also interested in developments in Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova, and President Rüütel gave a brief overview of the situation there. According to the assessment given by the Head of Estonian State all those counties have among other things complicated relations with Russia, as Russia’s policy does not always favour democratic developments in those countries.

President Rüütel asked Deputy Prime Minister Asselborn to convey to the Grand Duke of Luxembourg an invitation to visit Estonia.
