President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with representatives of cities who signed a memorandum regarding the Green Capital of Europe, among others Mayor of Tallinn Jüri Ratas, Mayor of Riga Aivars Aksenoksi and Mayor of Vilnius Arturaz Zuokas.
The President of the Republic expressed support to the idea of the Green Capital of Europe, initiated by Tallinn, and found that such undertaking would certainly heighten awareness of the value of nature protection in the EU. President Rüütel underlined that Tallinn is the right place to initiate that title, as Estonia has a very long nature protection tradition.
Today, representatives of 17 European cities signed a memorandum regarding the Green Capital of Europe in which they proposed that the European Commission would start awarding the title of Green Capital of Europe. Representatives of Tallinn, Tartu, Valga, Helsinki, Riga, Vilnius, Berlin, Kiel, Glasgow, Warsaw, Budapest, Prague, Dartford, Kotka, Ljubljana, Vienna and Madrid signed the memorandum.
