The President of the Republic opened a business forum in Thbilisi

President Rüütel and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel today started an official visit to Georgia opening a business forum in Thbilisi.

In the speech delivered at the forum, the President of the Republic introduced Estonian business environment, saying that the creation of a favourable business climate has gone hand in hand with the modernisation of the public sector and tax system. ''The contractual base for economic cooperation between Estonia and Georgia is becoming stronger: the Agreement for the Avoidance of Double Taxation is ready to be signed. An agreement on investments protection is being prepared,'' the Head of Estonian State said.

President of the Georgian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Jemal Inaishvili, as the organiser of the business forum, congratulated President Rüütel on his 78th birthday. Minister of Economic Development of Georgia Irakli Chogovadze introduced on-going reforms aimed to the modernisation of the state’s economy. Estonian Minister of Economy and Communications Edgar Savisaar introduced the current situation in various sectors of Estonian economy.

Within the framework of a separate programme the members of Estonian delegation had meetings with their Georgian colleagues. Minister of Justice Rein Lang met with Giorgi Kavtaradze, Minister of Justice of Georgia. Minister of Agriculture Ester Tuiksoo met with Mikhail Svimonishvili, Minister of Agriculture of Georgia. Vice-President of the Bank of Estonia Rein Minka met with Mr. Roman Gotsiridze, President of the Bank of Georgia. Minister of Economy and Communication Edgar Savisaar and the members of Estonian business delegation met with Mayor of Thbilisi Giorgi Ugulava.

The Estonian presidential couple visited Jvari Church at the top of a mountain near Thbilisi and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in Mtskheta, the one-time capital of Georgia. Following that, they watched a performance in Thbilisi State Puppet Theatre, which is headed by an internationally known director Rezo Gabriadze.

Tonight, the President of the Republic and Mrs. Rüütel hosted a reception at Thbilisi Marriot Courtyard Hotel, which was attended also by the Georgian presidential couple. In honour of President Rüütel a fireworks display was held in the sky above the centre of Thbilisi
