The President of the Republic visited Pärnu

President Rüütel today in Pärnu opened a forum on regional development and local government policy ''Strong local government - a basis of Estonia's balanced development'', visited Pärnu Hospital and the Pärnu Single Infantry Battalion.

Chairman of the Management Board of Pärnu Hospital Foundation Urmas Sule gave the President of the Republic an overview of the hospital’s work and showed the rooms of the hospital.

President Rüütel observed a joint training of the Pärnu Battalion and the Scouts Battalion at Varbla.After that, President Rüütel toured the Pärnu Single Infantry Battalion and observed a joint training of the Pärnu Battalion and the Scouts Battalion at Varbla. Introducing the battalion, the commanding officer Roosson emphasised the existence of good cooperation between the battalion and the governments of the city of Pärnu and Pärnu County.

In the words of the Head of Estonian State, the issue of the Pärnu Single Infantry Battalion has to be handled within the framework of the development plan of the entire Defence Forces' structure and to analyse how the closing down of the Battalion would influence the development of national defence as a whole, and only after that it would be possible to make decisions about the Battalion's future.

During the visit to the Pärnu Single Infantry Battalion the President of the Republic was accompanied by Chief of the General Staff of the Defence Forces Brigadier General Alar Laneman, Minister of Finance Aivar Sõerd and Governor of Pärnu County Toomas Kivimägi.
