The President of the Republic started his working visit to Ida-Viru County

President Rüütel, today, within the framework of his working visit to Ida-Viru County, visited Sillamäe and Narva-Jõesuu.

The President of the Republic opened the session of the Presidential Roundtable on National Minorities in Sillamäe Estonian Basic School where partial transition of Russian-medium gymnasiums to Estonian-medium tuition was discussed. Representatives of Russian-medium secondary schools and gymnasiums, parents of schoolchildren and local authorities of Ida-Viru County were also invited to participate in the work of the Roundtable.

President Rüütel emphasised that in order to guarantee mutual understanding it is important that people who are directly concerned would be involved in discussions on the educational reform of 2007. The President of the Republic added that if we manage to realise the transition in that way, we would be much stronger as a society and able to develop faster.

The Head of Estonian State participated also in Ida-Viru Sports Day where the county’s agreement on sports cooperation was signed, and took part in a sportive hiking event at Sillamäe. At the signing of the agreement on sports cooperation, President Rüütel called on everybody to spend more time outdoors and go in for sports.

Thereafter, the Head of Estonian State visited the Port of Sillamäe where he acquainted himself with the aquatorium of the port and M/F Vironia that is used to serve the recently launched line between Sillamäe and Kotka.

After that, President Rüütel made a tour at Narva-Jõesuu during which Mayor of Narva-Jõesuu Andres Noormägi introduced the town’s problems and development plans. In the evening, Ago Silde, Governor of Ida-Viru County gave the President of the Republic an overview of the county’s development strategy for the years 2005-2013.

In the words of the President of the Republic, he was pleased to see that Ida-Viru County had developed actively, and expressed hope that the goals set by the development strategy would be successfully translated into activities.

Tomorrow, President Rüütel, within his working visit to Ida-Viru County, will visit Tartu University Narva College, Narva NAKRO-INTEC industrial park, AS Narva Power Stations, Toila Port, and AS Wieneberger brick factory.
