State leaders signed the book of condolences

The President of the Republic and Mrs. Rüütel, the Chairman of the Riigikogu, and the Prime Minister made the first entry into the Book of Condolences that is opened in the Office of the President today, in the morning, and also signed their jointly written obituary on the occasion of the death of Lennart Meri.

President Arnold Rüütel and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel wrote in the book of condolences: “We express our deep condolences to the family of Lennart Meri, to his friends, and to all people who through his death have lost their inspirer and role model, friend and mentor, soul mate and travel companion, an outstanding creator both as a man of letters and a statesman. We bow our heads in mourning and gratitude.”

The Chairman of the Riigikogu Ene Ergma wrote on behalf of the Riigikogu: “The time arrived and the right man came. Lennart Meri as the first Head of State of Estonia following the restoration of independence presented Estonia a big opportunity. He taught us what is the real meaning of the Estonian state, and he taught us to serve our state. I express my sincere condolences to his relatives and to the people of Estonia.”

Prime Minister Andrus Ansip addressed his message of condolences to the wife of Lennart Meri and his children with their families, and wrote: “The death of Lennart Meri has touched the entire people of Estonia, all our citizens and hundreds of our friends abroad. He had become our Lennart for everyone. For you he had always been that. On today’s Day of Mourning, on behalf of the entire Government of the Republic and of myself I extend heartfelt condolences to you. Lifework of our Lennart has begun to bear fruit.”

Following the signing of the Book of Condolences, in the State Council Hall, the President of the Republic, the Chairman of the Riigikogu, and the Prime Minister signed the obituary that had been written jointly on the occasion of the death of Lennart Meri. Books of Condolences are opened starting from today’s Day of Mourning until Sunday, March 19, every day from 10 am to 5 pm. An electronic book of condolences is open for signing at the following address: www.riik.ee/lennartmeri. After the funeral all messages of condolences will be forwarded to the family of Lennart Meri.
