The President of the Republic met with the leaders of the Estonian Farmers' Federation
13.12.2005

President Rüütel today at Kadriorg discussed problems related to the development of rural life and small-scale production with the leaders of the Estonian Farmers' Federation.

The President of the Republic noted that in the interest of balanced and sustainable development a lot more attention has to be paid to farm production both in the field of legislation and support programmes. "Besides giving means of subsistence and farm production, the farms have also other functions and values, such as ensuring security, landscape management and cultivation of working habits. All that has to be taken into account also on the state level," President Rüütel said.

According to the leaders of the Farmers' Federation, one of the priorities of the next financial period should be organic farming, as it corresponds best to the requirements of sustainable development and healthiness. It was also stated that the consumers' awareness and demand for organic products is continuously growing, to answer such demand Estonia needs a science-based well organised programme for organic farming and necessary investments.

Both the President of the Republic and the leaders of the Farmers' Federation stressed that the diversity and sustainability of rural life and farm production is a big advantage that facilitates also the development of other branches of economy, such as tourism.
