PRELIMINARY NOTICE: The President of the Republic will leave today for a state visit to the Republic of Latvia

President Arnold Rüütel and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel will leave for a state visit to the Republic of Latvia today evening. In the course of the visit, Estonian-Latvian bilateral political, economic and cultural relations, as well as cooperation at regional and municipalities level, and in the context of the European Union and NATO will be discussed.

Tomorrow, December 7, the official reception ceremony, a tete-a-tete meeting of the presidents and a meeting with the delegations will be held in the Riga Castle. President Rüütel will lay a wreath to the Liberty Monument in Riga In the afternoon, the Head of Estonian State will meet with Latvian Prime Minister Aigars Kalvitis and Speaker of the Saeima Ingrida Udre. The President will also open a Latvian-Estonian business forum, will visit the Occupation Museum in Riga, and will meet with the Estonian community in Latvia.

In the evening, President Vaira Vike-Freiberga and Mr. Imants Freibergs will host a festive dinner in honour of the President of the Republic and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel.

Thursday morning, President Rüütel will make a speech in the Latvian Saeima, will meet with Mayor of Riga Aivars Aksenoks, and will visit SIA TMB Elements.

In the afternoon, the President of the Republic and Mrs. Rüütel will visit Jelgava where they meet with Mayor of Jelgava Andris Ravinš, and visit the Latvian Agricultural University where President Rüütel will be awarded an Honorary Doctor's degree. In Jelgava, a visit to the enterprise "Latvijas keramika" is also scheduled.

In the evening, President and Mrs. Rüütel will attend a reception held by the Ambassador of the Republic of Estonia to Latvia, Toomas Lukk in the building of Riga City Government and will open a Seto exhibition there.

On Friday morning, the Head of Estonian State and Mrs. Rüütel will visit the Riga Estonian School.

The official delegation accompanying the Head of Estonian State will include among others Ambassador of the Republic of Estonia to Latvia Toomas Lukk, Chief of the Estonian Defence Forces Vice Admiral Tarmo Kõuts, Minister of Economy and Communications Edgar Savisaar, Minister of Education and Research Mailis Reps, Minister of Regional Affairs Jaan Õunapuu, Minister of Environment Villu Reiljan, Governor of the Bank of Estonia Andres Lipstok, State Secretary Heiki Loot, Valga County Governor Georg Trašanov, Vice-Chairman of the Riigikogu Foreign Affairs Committee Marko Mihkelson, Member of the Riigikogu Toomas Alatalu, and Rector of Tallinn College of Engineering Arvi Altmäe. The Head of State will be accompanied also by a fourteen-member business delegation headed by Toomas Luman, President of the Estonian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The President of the Republic will arrive back in Estonia in the afternoon of December 9.
