President Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with representatives of the Urho Kaleva Kekkonen Heritage Society who had arrived in Tallinn on the occasion of the first Estonian language publication of a book written by Urho Kaleva Kekkonen, the long-time President of the Republic of Finland.

The book "Tamminiemi" was published in Finland in 1980 and it is considered to be President Kekkonen's foreign policy legacy. Presenting President Rüütel with a copy of the book that has been now published in the Estonian language, the chairman of the Urho Kaleva Kekkonen Heritage Society, Seppo Tiitien who is also Secretary General of Eduskunta, expressed his hope that the book would help Estonians to better understand Finns and the activities of their long-time head of state.

Accepting the present with gratitude, President Rüütel emphasised that Urho Kaleva Kekkonen was a great statesman who acted in the interest of the nation and for the sake of Finland's independence. "This principle, as well as cooperation between the states is of importance also in today's world," the President of the Republic added. The Head of State congratulated the guests also on the Day of Independence of the Republic of Finland that will be celebrated tomorrow, and asked Ambassador Jaakko Kalela, who was also present at the meeting, to extend his congratulations on the Independence Day to President Tarja Halonen.
