The President of the Republic recognised Estonian volunteers
04.12.2005

President Arnold Rüütel today in Estonia Concert Hall recognised Estonian volunteers. The Head of State is a patron of the Volunteers Recognition event. A hundred volunteers from all over Estonia received recognition and they were each presented with a Certificate of Appreciation and a breast badge.

The President of the Republic said that volunteer activities were not adequately recognised in Estonia yet. "Such citizens initiatives help to solve many problems. Or should we say that they prevent many problems," the President said. The Head of State added, "It is very significant that there are so many people who are freely doing such work for the best of the whole society without expecting any reward."

"There are thousands of possibilities to commit good deeds for the benefit of others, but there are also many possibilities not to do anything. You have chosen the first option. Thanks to your activities there are now more people among us who are happier and believe in goodness. This is of utmost importance if we want to leave something valuable to our future generations," the President of the Republic said.

The Estonian Volunteers Recognition event was organised within the framework of the European Year of Citizenship through Education. The aim of that event is to recognise those who have volunteered to contribute to the development of Estonian society. Private citizens, associations, government and local authorities as well as enterprises had the right to nominate candidates.
