The President of the Republic visited the city of Porto
30.11.2005

President Arnold Rüütel and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel today, in the course of their state visit, visited Porto, the second largest city in Portugal, where the President of the Republic was accompanied, beside the Estonian delegation, also by the Estonian Honorary Consul, Nuno dos Santos Ferreira.

The President of the Republic met with Mayor Rui Rio in the City Hall of Porto and signed the visitors' book. In the speech delivered at the festive reception ceremony, President Rüütel said that he attached great importance to the cooperation between the two small nations. "Mutual relationship and concern about the future, is quite natural. But the source of a nation's vitality is its cultural heritage and educated spirit rather than the size of its population," the Head of Estonian State said.

President Rüütel visited the Estonian Honorary Consulate in the centre of Porto and Church of Sćo Francisco, located near the Consulate. After that, the Estonian delegation made a boat trip on the Douro River, which flows through the city of Porto, and visited Ferreira Port Wine cellars of Sogrape wine company.

In the evening, the Porto Commercial Association held a reception in the Bolsa Palace where the Estonian Head of State met with the President of the Association, Rui Moreira, and delivered a speech. President Rüütel said that leaving Portugal he would take many good memories with him. "During the days we spent here we have had cordial and content-rich meetings with your Honourable President, Prime Minister, parliament members, mayors, entrepreneurs and many other Portuguese people. Our meetings on every level have given us assurance that we have a lot of possibilities for cooperation and that there is interest to realise those possibilities. First of all, I would like to emphasise a wish to enliven our bilateral economic relations," the President of the Republic said.

Early tomorrow morning, President Rüütel will leave Portugal for a working visit to Ukraine. The Head of State will return to Estonia on Friday, November 2.
