According to the President of the Republic, Estonians have rather good knowledge of Italy. "We have to give credit to Italian Embassy in Tallinn for their consistent work to introduce their country to Estonians and diversify the relations between our people," President Rüütel said.

The head of Estonian state remembered warmly his last year's meeting with the President of the Republic of Italy, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, and asked to extend to him his cordial greetings.

In the words of the Ambassador of Italy, the relations between Estonia and Italy have traditionally been excellent, friendly and mutually reinforced. "A clear sign of our political pledge towards the Estonian national cause can be drawn recollecting that Rome has immediately formalised diplomatic relationship with the Republic of Estonia soon after the restoration of independence and has promptly sustained and favoured Estonia's plan to become a member of NATO and the European Union, deeply convinced that Estonia has been part of the European civilization for many and many centuries," Ambassador Piaggesi said.
