The President of the Republic attended the 50th anniversary meeting of the Estonian Geographical Society
16.11.2005

President Arnold Rüütel today attended a festive meeting dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Estonian Geographical Society at the Academy of Sciences.

In his address, the President of the Republic said that geography as an international and humanistic science recognises laws that regulate the development of natural environment as well as that of mankind, and therefore is capable of maintaining the balance between the two. The Estonian community of geographers has actively participated in international scientific research but also in education work at home, President Rüütel added.

"The members of the Society have done especially praiseworthy work propagating and introducing Estonian regions. As a result a lot of publications about different places in Estonia have been printed, giving priceless material to the young people, which enables them to get acquainted with our varied nature and past. The members of the Society have also made a priceless contribution to designing Estonian-centred geography programmes for our schools," the Head of State said.

The Estonian Geographical Society was founded on November 15, 1955. The main fields of activity of the society are: scientific research work, publication of scientific and popular science articles and books, organisation of conferences, discussions, seminars and other scientific events and dissemination of geographical knowledge.
