The President of the Republic met with the Prime Minister of Croatia

President Arnold Rüütel  met with the Prime Minister of Croatia, Dr Ivo SanaderPresident Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with the Prime Minister of Croatia, Dr Ivo Sanader. The meeting addressed possibilities for intensification of bilateral relations.

The President of the Republic congratulated Croatia on the commencement of the EU accession negotiations, and expressed his conviction that in the context of European integration the relations between the two countries can develop even more actively. President Rüütel underlined the importance of further intensification of cooperation between the parliaments and the governments of the two countries, but also cooperation at other levels, covering a diverse range of areas from economy to science and culture.

The Prime Minister of Croatia thanked Estonia for supporting the commencement of the EU accession negotiations with Croatia and added that the two countries were bound together by mutual sympathy and similar historical experience. "We would like to catch up with the countries that joined the EU during the last enlargement round and to become a member of the EU, and we also ask for Estonia's support in connection with our NATO aspirations," Prime Minister Sanader said.

Both sides emphasised the importance of tourism cooperation. Prime Minister Sanader praised the beauty of Tallinn and Lahemaa and added that Croatia could learn from Estonia how to achieve more than 6 percent as the ten-year average economic growth and still maintain balanced budget and a low level of foreign debt.
