President of the Republic presented the Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana to Lord Patten

President Rüütel presented the Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana, the 1st class to Lord PattenPresident Rüütel today at Kadriorg presented the Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana, the 1st class to Lord Patten.

Handing over the Order, the President of Republic gave recognition to Lord Patten for his extensive and constructive work done in the interest of Estonia's accession to the European Union. President Rüütel added that the time that has passed since the accession has proved that Estonia has made the right decision. "Opinion polls show that since the accession the support of our people to the European Union has been steadily growing and people have recognised that the membership in the EU has brought stability to their lives and has contributed to the enhancement of wellbeing," the Estonian Head of State said.

The Estonian Head of State made the decision on bestowing the 1st class Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana on Lord Patten on February 2, 2005, on the occasion of the Independence Day, in recognition of his support to Estonia's accession to the European Union.

Lord Patten was the European Commissioner for External Relations in the years 1999 to 2004. In January 2005 he took his seat in the House of Lords of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Currently, Lord Patten is the Chancellor both for the Universities of Oxford and Newcastle.
