PRELIMINARY NOTICE: The President of the Republic to hand over an Order to Lord Patten24.10.2005
President Rüütel on October 27, at 4 pm, at Kadriorg will present Lord Patten the 1st class Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana.
The Estonian Head of State made the decision on bestowing the 1st class Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana on Lord Patten on February 2, 2005, on the occasion of the Independence Day, in recognition of his support to Estonia's accession to the European Union.
Lord Patten was the European Commissioner for External Relations in the years 1999 to 2004. In January 2005 he took his seat in the House of Lords of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Currently, Lord Patten is the Chancellor both for the Universities of Oxford and Newcastle.
