The President of the Republic participated in the opening of the Port of Sillamäe

President Arnold Rüütel participated in the opening of the Port of SillamäePresident Arnold Rüütel today, in Ida-Virumaa attended the opening ceremony of the most eastern deep-sea port of the EU - Port of Sillamäe.

In his greeting address, the President of the Republic talked about the role of transit services in Estonia's economy and added that advancing from the already achieved level required global thinking and capacious investments. "We have to eliminate the bottlenecks in transport infrastructure, and develop the network of logistic centres and technology parks. But even more important is the diversification of transit service and its related activities, enhancement of added value and promotion of international cooperation," the Head of State said.

The President of the Republic pointed out the necessity of devloping trade with Russia, but also with China, Japan and Kazakhstan and other countries. President Rüütel acknowledged and thanked the developers of the port for having long-perspective vision and for their courage to take risks.

Beside the Head of State, also Board Chairman of Port of Sillamäe Tiit Vähi, Governor of Ida-Virumaa Ago Silde, Mayor of Sillamäe Ain Kiviorg, Minister of Economy and Communications Edgar Savisaar and others spoke at the opening ceremony. Chairman of the Riigikogu Ene Ergma and Prime Minister Andrus Ansip also attended the ribbon cutting ceremony.
