President of the Republic greeted President of the Republic of Moldova

The President of the Republic of Moldova Vladimir Voronin arrived for an official visit to Estonia today, and he was greeted at Kadriorg by the President of the Republic of Estonia.

The official welcoming ceremony in front of the Presidential Palace was followed by a tete-ą-tete meeting between the Presidents and, thereafter, by a meeting with the delegations. The meeting focused on the development of bilateral co-operation between the two countries. Both Heads of State acknowledged their interest towards intensification of mutual contacts.

The President of the Republic expressed his content with the fact that Moldova has resolved to follow the path set by Estonia, and to develop the country via transatlantic relations. President Rüütel emphasised that Estonia is willing to share her experience with Moldova in promoting the country's closer integration with the European Union and NATO, as well as in democratisation and modernisation of the society. Estonia's Head of State suggested that the two nations - by co-operating at the experts level - could develop alternative solutions to many momentous issues faced by Moldova, including, for instance, improving the efficiency of the border guard organisation, European integration and issues connected with the Transnistria conflict. Moreover, President Rüütel also made a reference to ensuring transparency of public processes, and better organisation of local governments that could be achieved via possibilities offered by the information technology, as key topics within this context.

According to the President of the Republic of Moldova Estonia's experience as a new Member Sate of the European Union is extremely valuable, and Moldova appreciates Estonians' willingness to share their experience. President Voronin stated that this visit to Estonia is of a great import for Moldova, and he invited the President of Estonia to a return visit. President Voronin reviewed Moldova's positions regarding the Transnistrian question, stating - among other issues - that Moldova wishes the assistance of the European Union in organisation of free elections in Transnistria intended to be held under international monitoring.

In the evening the President of the Republic and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel will host a festive dinner in honour of the President of the Republic of Moldova.

The President of the Republic of Moldova will depart from Estonia tonight.
