President of the Republic met with Honorary Consuls
24.09.2005

President Arnold Rüütel and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel held a reception to Honorary Consuls of the Republic of Estonia today at the Kadriorg Art Museum. 56 Honorary Consuls from 34 countries have come to Estonia to attend the Fourth Conference of Estonian Honorary Consuls convened by the Foreign Ministry.

The head of state greeted Honorary Consuls and said that Estonia in its entirety should be firmly rooted in the world community. "International economic cooperation and sustained relationships with development trends in the world economy are definitely a binding component. However, I am convinced that cultural, research and educational cooperation between different nations is the most important link in the global process for various values to meet and develop understanding as well as comprehension. Therefore this is work to be continued. You have played a significant role in this development and I consider it important to move forward together," said the President of the Republic.

Addressing the Honorary Consuls, President Rüütel added: "You are called to work for the benefit of Estonia, establish and deepen contacts between Estonia and your country of residence. This is a broad field, which takes duty-bound and persevering people who are continuously informed of Estonia's developments. All of you have displayed ability to pull this task forward, your voluntary commitment is remarkable and Estonia is grateful to you. Without your participation Estonia would not be as successful as it is today."

The President of Estonia awarded Dr Virachai Techavijit, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Estonia in the Kingdom of Thailand, with the 3rd Class Order of the Estonian Red Cross for the services rendered when helping Estonian citizens in the days following the tsunami, which hit South-East Asian countries last December.

On behalf of Honorary Consuls Jaak Treiman, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Estonia in Los Angeles took the floor and thanked for the acknowledgement. As a sign of the Honorary Consuls' good will, Jaak Treiman handed over to the President of the Republic a cheque for 40 000 Estonian kroons for the President of the Republic's Cultural Foundation to use it on charity, primarily to support children.
